Intro to Sport Climbing

What is Sport Climbing?

Sport Climbing is a form of outdoor climbing. These are routes that are protected with bolts. These bolts are placed there by the first person to ascend the route and are left there for other climbers to use. It is pretty much the exact same as lead climbing indoors... except you are outdoors.

Most Scottish Sport Climbs are no longer than a single pitch and is a fantastic way to introduce yourself to outdoor leading.

During the course our experienced instructor will introduce you to;

•    Leading a Sport Climb

•    Belaying for a Sport Climb

•    Equipment Required

•    Selecting Routes

•    Using and Interpreting Guidebooks

•    Movement on the Rock

•    Outdoor Climbing Etiquette

The courses will take place at Bennybeg Crag, near Crieff. It is approximately a 1 hour 10 minute drive from the Glasgow Climbing Centre. Bennybeg is a popular site for those starting out as it has a really good spread of grades. Sports Climbing uses the french grading system, which is the exact same as the grades used here in the Glasgow Climbing Centre.

To attend this course you must be competently lead climbing at a minimum of 6a for at least 6 months.

Obviously being in Scotland the weather can be quite unpredictabe, so we always recommend turning up to the site fully prepared. Make sure you have plenty of warm and waterproof clothes with you. The sun may be splitting the trees when you leave the house but it can end up blistering winds and ice cold rain by the time you arrive on the site.
Bring plenty of food and drink with you, there is nothing worse than being stuck in the middle of nowhere with no chocolate or coffee!

Typically we ask that you meet the instructor on site, who will have set up the climbs and be eagerly awaiting your arrival. We will try our best to email you with directions and some information about the site and the weather. Sessions require a minimum number of participants and may sometimes be cancelled due to small numbers or bad weather conditions. We will always try our best to give you as much notice as we can.

If you require helmet, harness or boot hire, please let us know when you are making the booking, this is included in the cost of the session.

No dates scheduled at the moment.
