What is a traverse wall?
"Traversing" is used in the world of climbing to mean that you climb across rather than up. Going across takes just as much skill, strength, and agility as going up, and professional climbers regularly use traverse walls to hone their techniques. It is a safe yet still exciting climbing wall, and is specially suited to children because feet are never more than 40cm off the ground! A traverse wall comprises handholds and foot-holds that allow children to scramble across a wall like human spiders. It provides a great way for children to exercise and is hugely popular in school playgrounds. The climbing holds are attached directly onto existing walls, so you do not need any special preparation. And because feet are so close to the ground, it's incredibly safe too.The design includes a band of footholds about 40 cm from ground level, a gap of 1.5m between footholds and handholds, and finally a band of hand holds to approximately 2.25 metres high. On average there are 7 to 8 holds per linear meter. With footholds no more than half a metre above ground level, there is no requirement for safety matting or special supervision!
