New Climber ?

If you've never climbed before or if it has been some time since you last did - here is the section for you!

Sometimes starting a new sport can be a daunting task - lots of new equipment to buy and confusing jargon to learn. It's often quite hard to broach a new environment without feeling like an outsider. Here at the Glasgow Climbing Centre, we make it easy for you to get going, from the first introduction explaining what equipment you'll need, the terms you will learn and what routes to attempt.

Everyone is welcome, from absolute beginner through to the most technical rock-athlete pushing extreme climbs to the limit - they climb side by side at the Glasgow Climbing Centre. Become inspired to climb by watching other more proficient climbers attack interesting routes. Pick up terminology by hanging out and just taking it all in. Meet partners to climb with as you progress and make climbing a sport that features on your weekly agenda.

Here are some frequently asked questions from new climbers at the Glasgow Climbing Centre.

Q - Ok, so I want to climb at the Glasgow Climbing Centre - what now?
A - Simply enroll on our Indoor Introduction to Climbing course and let our instructors get you up to speed.

Q - What do I need?
A - The Glasgow Climbing Centre can hire you everything you need to get started. Once you feel confident you know what's what, then you can invest in your own equipment at the Summits shop.

Q - My friend is a climber. Can I get them to show me how?
A - They must be a member of the Glasgow Climbing Centre already and a proficient climber. Do you trust them to tie your knots and to hold you if you fall?

Q - I think I remember how to tie knots - could you remind me?
A - If you think you need reminding, then you'd better speak to us before you start climbing!

Q - I don't know if I'm strong enough to climb - what if I fall off?
A - Perhaps surprisingly, climbing isn't always about strength. We have climbing walls for all levels of climber, so you can get started right away!

Q - My friend has a rope I can borrow - can I bring that?
A - Most of our routes that we recommend for beginner/intermediate climbers have ropes already on the walls. You should only bring a rope if you are already a confident climber. Do you trust your friend's rope to be safe anyway?

Q - My friends are all going to the Glasgow Climbing Centre, but I'm not sure if I want to climb or not.
A - Feel free to come to the centre - find your way around without feeling pressured into climbing. Quite often, after watching others climb for a few minutes, you'll be eager to put your shoes on and give it a go yourself anyway!
