We at the Glasgow Climbing Centre are very proud of our Youth Squad. and our Squad members have been having success in nationwide competitions such as the Scottish Schools Climbing Competition where we had seven podium placements.
The Youth Squad meets once each week for three hours, where individuals are trained by our experienced and qualified GCC coaches. For those on the Squad it is an incredible opportunity to enter into the friendly and welcoming world of serious climbing. For many adults, a passion for climbing has given direction to their entire life and the impact of a passionate commitment to the sport from a young age cannot be understated. With the very real prospect of climbing becoming an Olympic Sport the necessity for structure and development within climbing has never been greater.
We run a Youth Squad selection night once every six months, usually in March and September. Anyone is welcome to come and enter free of charge, choosing to either lead climb or top rope a selection of routes and tackle a select few boulder problems. However, to be on the squad, children must be comfortable with lead climbing and able to belay safely. Commitment to attending training sessions is essential, as is a willingness to climb at least once further each week.
The cost of joining the Youth Squad is £38 each month, with a minimum commitment of six months. As well as the weekly coaching sessions, this includes unlimited free entry to the centre (although under 14s require supervision, and further courses such as Rock Ratz or Climbatize are not included) and GCC Squad uniform.
